Bodywork is essential to any horse’s health and training regime from the senior paddock companion to the dressage horse, eventer or pleasure horses and ponies.
There are many reasons why your horse may require bodywork. You may notice stiffness when riding, he may avoid the bit, avoid girthing up or has starting pigrooting. He may be recovering from an injury, arthritis, have an open wound or a lameness issue. Many times horses develop muscular issues from training, wear and tear, strains, falls or even just hooning in the paddock. These muscle issues, if left unaddressed may cause other compensatory issues, lameness and pain. Horses learn to adapt to these muscle issues and eventually over time other areas will atrophy or overcompensate, placing stress on other limbs, tendons and muscles.
Releasing these restrictions within the muscles allows the muscle to function to its full capacity. Flexible, supple muscles have greater circulation and lymphatic drainage. The range of motion is increased and more powerful (absolutely essential in the competition horse!). The horse is then able to engage the correct muscles to perform specific movements more easily and the muscles are able to develop correctly. Your horse will be performing pain free and will be a more willing partner to you.
